Abstract Landslide susceptibility and water balance in the soil, in the community of Lagoa Encantada, Recife Metropolitan Area, Brazil, were assessed using the computational models SINMAP and HYDRUS-1D. The SINMAP input parameters were the physical and hydrodynamic characteristics of the soil, evidence of landslides and the DEM; and for the HYDRUS-1D model, the hydraulic parameters of the soil. For both programs, simulations were also carried out, based on the rain recorded in the area. The soil was classified using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). To assess infiltration processes that cause landslides, HYDRUS-1D was used, under the same scenarios simulated by the SINMAP model and also in the evaluation of the infiltrated volume, in real landslides. The SINMAP results (susceptibility maps) show a 71% increase in the susceptible area (SI < 1; SI = stability index) between the two precipitation scenarios, and are consistent with evidence of landslides. The HYDRUS-1D results complement SINMAP results and suggest that infiltration values for simulated scenarios were similar to those of real landslides. It is concluded that it is possible to map areas of greater instability and to predict possible landslides in different precipitation scenarios, by quantitatively assessing the infiltrated volume that contributes to the destabilization of the soil.

Resumo Eventos extremos de cheia que ocorrem poucas horas após a precipitação em regiões de altas declividades, conhecidos como flash flood, são observados na bacia hidrográfica do rio Una. O artigo tem como objetivo avaliar a modelagem hidrológica e hidrodinâmica com dados sub-diários dos maiores eventos de cheia da bacia do rio Una nos anos de 2011 e 2017. Precipitação e vazão sub-diárias foram utilizadas nos modelos Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) e River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). A calibração foi avaliada pela eficiência de Nash-Sutcliffe (NSE), percentual de tendência e a razão dada pelo erro quadrático médio pelo desvio padrão dos dados observados (RSR). Os parâmetros taxa de infiltração máxima e coeficiente de pico do método HU Snyder apresentaram maior sensibilidade na calibração do HEC-HMS. A calibração exibiu um bom desempenho (estação Catende NSE=0.78, RSR=0.46; estação Palmares NSE=0.68, RSR=0.57). O modelo hidrodinâmico unidimensional apresentou instabilidades devido às regiões íngremes da bacia. A solução 2D foi necessária para superar esse problema, o que permitiu representar satisfatoriamente o nível da água na cidade de palmares.

Abstract Flash floods are observed in the Una River Basin, Pernambuco/Brazil. This particular type of flood is a short-duration hydrological event with occurrence of the peak flow within minutes to few hours after the onset of the rainfall, taking place typically in mountainous regions. The objective of the paper was to assess the sub-daily hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling of flood events in 2011 and 2017. Sub-daily precipitation and streamflow were applied to the models Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) and River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). Model evaluation methods such as Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), percent bias, and the ratio of the root mean squared error to the standard deviation of measured data (RSR) were used in the calibration process. The maximum infiltration rate and the Snyder peak coefficient estimation were the most sensitive parameters in the hydrological model. The calibration of the HEC-HMS showed good performances (Catende station NSE=0.78 and RSR=0.46; Palmares station NSE=0.68 and RSR=0.57). During HEC-RAS 1D flow simulations, steep regions in the Una River caused numerical instabilities. The 2D solution was needed to overcome this problem, allowing us to represent the water level in the city of Palmares satisfactorily.

RESUMO O presente estudo buscou investigar a utilização de aplicativos móveis em smartphones, especificamente o aplicativo Hidromapp, como ferramenta técnica de suporte para a coleta de marcas de cheia, incluindo também a aplicação dos dados coletados no mapeamento de áreas de inundação. Para tal, no município de Jaqueira-Pernambuco, foram coletadas em campo informações sobre a inundação ocorrida em maio de 2017, utilizando smartphones e o aplicativo Hiromapp. As informações foram posteriormente utilizadas como dados de entrada para a modelagem e reconstituição da mancha de inundação, por meio de técnicas de geoprocessamento e Modelo Digital de Terreno de alta resolução (Pernambuco Tridimensional – PE3D). Para a avaliação dos resultados, a mancha de inundação reconstituída foi comparada com resultados de modelagem hidrodinâmica, a partir de indicadores estatísticos (RMSE e Índice de Sucesso Crítico - C). Além disso, foram observados aspectos relacionados ao desempenho do aplicativo Hidromapp enquanto ferramenta de suporte para a coleta em campo de marcas de cheia. Como resultados, o aplicativo demonstrou bom desempenho para a coleta de dados em campo, e o método aplicado possibilitou uma estimativa parcialmente adequada do evento reconstituído, em que a área (extensão) da inundação apresentou alto grau de similaridade com o modelo comparado, porém com ressalvas para as profundidades da lâmina d’água, em que foram detectadas discrepâncias consideráveis em alguns pontos da área de estudo.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to investigate the use of mobile applications on smartphones, specifically the Hidromapp application, as a technical support tool for flood data collection, as well as its use in flood mapping. To this end, information about a flood event of May 2017 was collected in the municipality of Jaqueira-Pernambuco, using smartphones and the Hidromapp application. Information was later used as input data for modeling and floodplain reconstitution. The study used geoprocessing techniques and a high-resolution Digital Terrain Model (Pernambuco Tridimensional - PE3D). For result evaluation, the reconstituted floodplain was compared with hydrodynamic modeling results using statistical indicators (RMSE and Critical Success Index - C). The app presented a good performance as a support tool for field collection of floodmark data. The applied method allowed a partially adequate estimation of the reconstituted event, in which the flooded area (extension) showed a high degree of similarity with the compared model, but with caveats for water surface elevations, where considerable discrepancies were detected in some points of the study area.
